The multinational network carries out multi-disciplinary research on airborne particulate matter (PM) and its health effects. PM is ubiquitous in the atmosphere and is generated through both natural processes and human activity. Individual particles display a wide range of physical, chemical, structural and surface properties. When inhaled, the smallest particles can migrate to the deep lung, where they cause various types of biological and biochemical responses.
To improve our knowledge on PM and its impact on health, we founded this network, which includes the following institutions: Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, Universitätsklinikum and Deutscher Wetterdienst in Freiburg; Université Louis Pasteur and Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Strasbourg; Université de Haute-Alsace in Mulhouse; Université de Fribourg; and Centre de Recherche Public - Gabriel Lippmann.
